A Clinical Study on Malignant Tumors in Otolaryngologic Field


Abstract
A clinical analysis was made on 207 cases of malignant tumors in otolaryngologic field observed during a period of 3} years, at the department of otolaryngology, colleg of Medicine, Seoul National University.
The sex ratio of male and female was 4.2:1 and it was 8:1 at the decade of 50-59. The ratio was 11.2:1 in malignancies of the larynx.
The age distribution showed the highest frequency in the decade of 50-59 with 34.3%. In male, the mean age was 54.9 years and in female, it was 48.3 years. The mean age of the total cases was 54 years.
The most frequent site of involvement was larynx with the frequency of 30% of the cases and followed by the tongue (14.5%).
Ninety-seven percent of the laryngeal cancer was distributed in the age group of 40-69.
The duration of symptom was within 3 months in 38.1% and 4-6 month in 25.7%.
The cases were classified histologically into carcinoma (88%), and sarcoma (12%) and the ration of carconoma and sarcoma was 7:1, and it was 13:1 in male and 2:1 in female. The mean age of the carcinoma was 55.5 and it was 33.3 in sarcoma with the mean age difference of about 20. The male and female sex ratio of cancer was 5.7:1 and it was almost equal in female tumor (12:13).
Larynx was the most common site of involvement in carcinomas (33.5%) and tonsil was the most common site of involvement in sarcomas (40%).
The squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent tumor (83%) in carcinomas and followed by undifferentiated cell carcinoma (13%).
Ninety-six percent of the sarcoma was the malignant lymphoma.
